Definition and Form:

A preposition is a word placed before a Noun and Pronoun to show its relation to some other word in the sentence.

پریپوزیشن اس لفظ کو کہتے ہیں جو اسم یا اسم ضمیر سے پہلے استعمال ہوتا ہے ، اور یہ کسی دوسرے لفظ سے تعلق کو ظاہر کرتا ہے۔

Example:

The book is on the table.
The water is in the glass.

Prepositions are of five different forms.

Simple Preposition: In, it, with, by, of, from, up, to, after, over, under, within
Double Preposition: are used when simple prepositions do not serve the purpose. Double prepositions are: into, onto, within, outside, etc.
Compound Preposition: Within, Inside, Outside, Beneath, etc.

Participle Preposition: Present or Past Participles are used as prepositions such as Pending, During, Except, Concerning, Regarding, etc.
Phrase Preposition: Sometimes two or more words, followed by a preposition, make a phrase, the preposition thus used in are called Phrase Preposition. Examples: Inspire of, by means of, in front of, in opposition to, with reference to.

Uses of Prepositions

Prepositions of Place:

کے طور پر استعمال ہوتے ہیں۔ Prepositions of Place مندرجہ ذیل الفاظ

On, Over, Above, In, Under, Against, Beside, Across, and At.

On: The paper is on the table means in contact with the surface of the table.
Over: The paper is over the table means not in touch with the table.
Above: The paper is above the table means little over the table.

Inside: The paper is inside the table means inside the drawer.
Under: The paper is under the table means on the floor but within the area covered by the table.
Against: The paper is lying against the table means resting against or in touch with.
Beside: The paper is lying beside the table means near the table but very close to it.
Across: He walked across the park means stretching from one side to another side.
Through: I passed through the park means not in any specification.
He lives at Lala Musa in Gujrat.

Prepositions of Time:

یہ وہ پریپوزیشنز ہیں جو وقت کو طاہر کرتے ہیں۔

At, An, In, By, After

At: I shall reach the college at 10:30.

متعین وقت کو ظاہر کرتا ہے۔ یعنی میں تھیک وقت 10:30 بجے کالج پہنچ جاؤں گا۔

By: I shall reach the college by 10:30.

یعنی میں 10:30 بجے تک کالج پہنچ جاؤں گا۔ اس سے پہلے بھی پہنچ سکتا ہوں لیکن اس سے زیادہ دیر نہیں ہوگی۔

At: At six O’clock, at noon, at midnight.
On: On Monday, On July 29th, On Eid day.

دنوں کو ظاہر کرنے کیلئے

In: In August, in winter, in the morning, in the evening.

مدت یا عرصے کو ظاہر کرنے کیلئے

At night, At Eid (The period of a certain date)
On the morning/ Afternoon/ Evening of a certain date.
He reached the college on the morning of 21st August.

In Time: He reached the station in time.

سے مراد مقررہ وقت سے پہلے In time

On Time: He reached the station on time.

سے مراد عین وقتِ مقررہ پر On Time

Since: I have been lying in this house since 1990.
I have been taken nothing since morning.

کسی کام کے آغاز کو ظاہر کرتا ہے۔ جب کہ کام کسی کسی متعین وقت سے شروع ہو رہا ہو Since

کیلئے مخصوص ہے۔ Present Perfect Tense لگائیں۔ یہ عام طور پر Since

For: I did not speak to my brother for two days.
It has been raining for the last three days.
He started reading for the age of sixteen.

اس وقت کیلئے استعمال ہوتا ہے جو گزر گیا ہو یا گزر رہا ہو یا مستقبل میں گزرے گا۔ یہ غیر متعین عرصے کو ظاہر کرتا ہے۔

From:
The college was closed from 5th to 23rd of this month.
I shall join you from next month.

اس وقت لگتا ہے جب وقت کا تعلق کسی بھی زمانے سے ہو اور فعل کی کوئی بھی صورت ہو۔ From

Since or From

میں فرق ظاہر کرتے وقت یہ خیال رکھیں کہ دونوں الفاظ قطعی طور پر مقرر شدہ تاریخ یا دن یا وقت کے ساتھ استعمال کئے جاتے ہیں۔

اس بات کی طرف اشارہ کرتا ہے کہ وقت ابھی ختم نہیں ہوا۔ Since

For Example: He has been off duty since November.

بھی کسی مقرر شدہ تاریخ یا وقت کی طرف اشارہ کرتا ہے۔ مگر اس کے ساتھ ایسی صورت میں لفظ From

Use of During:

اس وقت کی نشاندہی کرتا ہے جو گزر رہا ہو۔ During

Prepositions of Manner

جملے میں ذریعہ یا طریقہ کا اظہار کرتی ہے۔ Prepositions of Manner

Examples of Prepositions of Manner:

We travel by bus/ train/ sea/ plane/ air.
We travel on horseback, on foot, on a bicycle, or by bicycle.
We arrive in a country or town.
We arrive at any destination e.g. an address, a hotel, theatre, or station.
We get in/ into a public or private vehicle. (enter)
We get out of public or private vehicle. (alight)

Prepositions of directions & the use of some other prepositions:

کسی چیز کا رخ بتانے کیلئے استعمال ہوتی ہیں۔ Prepositions یہ

In, Into, Toward, In front of, off.

Examples:

In: He is in the room.

ان چیزوں کیلئے استعمال ہوتا ہے جو ساکن ہوں۔ In

Into: He jumped into the river.

ایسی چیزوں کیلئے استعمال کرتے ہیں جو متحرک ہوں۔ Into

ملکیت کیلئےاستعمال ہوتا ہے۔ Of

Off: The branch of the tree was broken off.

علیحدگی کا کاٹ کر علیحدہ کردینے کے معنی میں استعمال کرتے ہیں۔ Off

Towards: The cat ran towards the rat.

رخ کو ظاہر کرنے کیلئے استعمال کیا جاتا ہے۔ Towards

Behind: He is standing behind the certain.

جگہ کیلئے استعمال کیا جاتا ہے۔ Behind

By: He was killed by the robber.

کسی شخص یا کام کرنے والے کیلئے استعمال کیا جاتا ہے۔ By
